Pakistan and the United Kingdom have reopened development talks after an eight-year pause, marking a renewed commitment to strengthening cooperation in economic growth, trade, investment, and education. Both sides view the resumption of dialogue as a significant opportunity to reset bilateral relations and expand collaboration in multiple sectors.
In a key meeting, Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and British Minister for Development Affairs Baroness Chapman discussed ways to enhance partnerships in trade, investment, environmental sustainability, and social development. They stressed the importance of deepening cooperation to support long-term national and regional development goals.
Officials noted that economic ties between the two countries have improved in recent years, driven largely by initiatives under the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC). The number of British companies operating in Pakistan has grown to more than 200, contributing to a bilateral trade volume exceeding £5.5 billion. This rise reflects increasing investor confidence and stronger commercial engagement.
During her visit, Baroness Chapman joined Federal Education Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui to inaugurate the next phase of the Pak-UK Education Gateway. This expanded phase introduces a start-up fund, online learning programs, and broader academic opportunities aimed at promoting skills development and strengthening linkages between educational institutions in both countries.
Alongside trade and education, both sides discussed enhancing investment in health, population welfare, and environmental protection, identifying these areas as central to future cooperation. The meeting also marked the launch of the Green Compact Program, a joint initiative focused on environmental protection, sustainable resource management, and green technologies. The program underscores the shared commitment of Pakistan and the UK to addressing climate challenges while fostering environmentally responsible economic growth.
