Reuters: Three plaintiffs from Tennessee, including two minors, have filed a lawsuit against xAI, alleging that its Grok image generator enabled the creation of sexually explicit content using real photos of individuals. The case, filed in federal court in San Jose, seeks class-action status on behalf of individuals across the United States who were identifiable in AI-generated explicit images or videos based on their real likeness.
The lawsuit claims that Elon Musk’s AI company failed to implement adequate safeguards to prevent the generation of explicit content involving minors. According to the plaintiffs, their personal images were digitally manipulated into sexualised content and circulated online, causing emotional distress and reputational harm. The complaint further alleges that all three plaintiffs were underage at the time the images were created, raising serious concerns about the misuse of artificial intelligence in generating child sexual abuse material.
In response to earlier backlash, xAI had announced in January that it restricted users from editing images of real people in revealing clothing and from generating such content in jurisdictions where it is illegal. However, the plaintiffs argue these measures were insufficient.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages, legal fees, and a court order requiring xAI to stop the alleged practices. Legal representatives for the plaintiffs stated that the case involves minors whose school and family photos were transformed into explicit material without consent.xAI has not yet issued an official response to the allegations.
