KYIV: Russia launched a large overnight missile and drone attack on Ukraine, killing four people and damaging infrastructure across several regions, Ukrainian officials said on Saturday.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the main target was energy infrastructure near Kyiv, though residential buildings, schools and businesses were also damaged.
Officials said the attack involved around 430 drones and 68 missiles, most of which were intercepted by Ukrainian air defences. Regions targeted included Sumy Oblast, Kharkiv Oblast, Dnipro and Mykolaiv Oblast. Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said the strikes and shelling left consumers in six regions without electricity. All four deaths were reported in Kyiv Oblast, where 15 people were also wounded and damage was recorded in four districts, according to regional military administrator Mykola Kalashnyk.
Zelenskiy said Russia may be using the escalating conflict involving Iran as a distraction to intensify attacks on Ukraine and again urged allies to increase production of air-defence weapons. The attack also prompted Poland, a member of NATO, to scramble jets to protect its airspace, though no violations were reported.
