DNIPRO, Ukraine: Ukrainian authorities reported that a Russian missile strike on the eastern-central city of Dnipro on Monday left four people dead and 40 others injured.
The attack occurred as diplomatic efforts to resolve the nearly four-year conflict intensified, with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy traveling to Paris on Monday, following discussions his delegation held a day earlier with U.S. officials.
Vladyslav Haivanenko, the acting governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region, stated on the Telegram app that 11 of the wounded were in serious condition. He also confirmed that search and rescue operations had concluded.
Ukraine’s emergency services said the strike damaged car repair shops, other local businesses, an office building, and 49 vehicles.
Vitalii Kovalenko, who was inside his auto repair shop when the missile landed, recounted the moment. “Everyone fell to the floor, then we started to figure out where the employees were. I ran upstairs and saw that one guy was fine, but he was a bit covered in shrapnel,” he said, noting that all his workers survived.
Images shared on Telegram depicted firefighters responding at the impact site, rescue workers carrying people on stretchers, and what appeared to be a body bag.
Dnipro, an industrial hub, and its surrounding region have been frequent targets of Russian missile and drone attacks, resulting in civilian casualties and extensive damage to homes, infrastructure, and industrial facilities.
Russia did not immediately issue a response regarding the strike.
